41 ANIMATIONSPROJEKTE FÜR FAST 300 MILLIONEN EURO
Beiträge aus 16 Ländern: Bei Cartoon Movie 2007 werden die Weichen für die kommenden Animationsfilme gestellt

Potsdam/Brüssel, 22.1.2007 – Cartoon Movie, das bedeutendste Event der europäischen Anmationsfilmindustrie, findet vom 7. bis 9. März 2007 zum 9. Mal in Potdam-Babelsberg statt. Wieder zeigen die wichtigsten Produzenten Europas internationalen Verwertern und Finanziers ihre Projekte und stellen damit die Weichen für das, was es an animierten Filmen im nächsten und in den folgenden Jahren in den Kinos zu sehen gibt. So hatten drei der zehn im vergangenen Jahr präsentierten Filme („Kirikou et les bêtes sauvages“, „Asterix und die Wikinger“ und „Der kleine Eisbär 2 – Die geheimnisvolle Insel“ in ihrem Ursprungsland jeweils mehr als 1,5 Millionen Zuschauer.

Die Auswahlkommission hat in ihrer letzten Sitzung zunächst 41 Projekte in verschiedenen Fertigstellungsstufen ausgewählt. 24 Projekte sind in der Entwicklungs- und Vorbereitungsphase, acht befinden sich in der Fertigung und neun Filme sind abgeschlossen.

Auch in diesem Jahr kommen mit 14 Produktionen oder Koproduktionen die meisten Projekte aus Frankreich, knapp gefolgt von Deutschland mit 13 Projekten. Spanische Produzenten haben sieben Projekte dabei, dänische Produzenten fünf und britische Produzenten vier. Weitere Produktionen und Koproduktionen kommen aus Belgien, Estland, Finnland, Irland, Island, Italien, Lettland, Luxemburg, Schweden, der Schweiz und der Tschechischen Republik. Insgesamt sind es Projekte aus 16 Ländern, drei mehr als im letzten Jahr.

Wie immer handelt es sich bei den Projekten überwiegend um internationale Koproduktionen, schließlich können Animationsfilme – im Gegensatz zu den meisten europäischen „Realfilmen“ – auch außerhalb ihres Ursprungslandes nennenswerte Erfolge feiern. Und: Die Budgets von Animationsfilmen sind meistens wesentlich höher – die Projekte bei Cartoon Movie 2007 haben ein Gesamtbudget von 300 Mio. Euro!

Cartoon Movie ist als Kombination aus Branchenforum und Finanzierungsmarkt eine Fachveranstaltung für die europäische Animationsindustrie. Daneben wird der europäische Animationsverband CARTOON herausragende Produktionsfirmen, Verleiher und Regisseure mit den Cartoon Movie Tributes für Verdienste und Engagement um den europäischen Animationsfilm ehren.

CARTOON MOVIE CONTINUES TO BOOST EUROPEAN ANIMATION

This year 41 projects will be presented with an overall budget of almost 300 million EUR
France, Germany and Spain are the countries with the largest participation
Some 500 participants will get a glimpse of the main feature titles to be premiered over the next two years

Brussels, January 22nd, 2007. For the ninth consecutive year, the German city of Potsdam is hosting an annual gathering for European animation with the celebration of Cartoon Movie 2007, a business forum organized by the European Association of Animation Film. Some 500 professionals will meet in the Babelsberg Studio on March 7th-9th for this event aimed at boosting the financing and distribution of European animated films.

This year’s edition will present 41 new animation features - including both completed films and projects that are in various stages of production - with an overall budget of almost 300 million EUR.

France is once again the most represented country, with a total of 14 projects among sole and co-productions. Germany - with 13 projects - doubles its presence from a year earlier, and is followed by Spain with seven projects, Denmark with five and the UK with four.

The projects presented this year confirm some of the main trends seen in recent editions of Cartoon Movie. Films created for family audiences continue to be a majority (67.5%), as is 3D animation, which is used in almost 50% of the projects. Over half of the films have a budget between 3 and 5 million EUR.

Since its creation in 1999 Cartoon Movie has had a significant impact on the European market. Three of the ten completed films presented last year (Kirikou & the Wild Beasts, Asterix & the Vikings and The Little Polar Bear – The Mysterious Island) sold over 1.5 million admissions in their country of origin.

Cartoon Movie 2007 main partners are Media Programm of the EU – Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg – Ministry of Economics of the Land Brandenburg – Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM) – Filmförderungsanstalt / German federal Film Board (FFA), InvestitionsBank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB) and Studio Babelsberg.
